Carlos Baffigo brings over 30 years of management experience in library administration, facility management, construction, technology administration, and security. Most recently, Carlos served as Deputy Library Director for the Pasadena Public Library system in Pasadena, CA.
Carlos' past experience managing library operations includes: Collection Development, Reference, Children’s/YA/Adult Services, Cataloging, Circulation, Acquisitions, ILS Administration, Database Management, and Outreach.
At Pasadena, Carlos led the Library’s efforts to retrofit and renovate the historic Pasadena Central Library. He coordinated the renovation, relocation, and opening of the Pasadena Unified School District Jefferson Elementary School campus (205,000 sq. ft.) as an alternate library branch/city operations complex, and re-purposed a 35,000 sq. ft. warehouse into a library distribution center. While at Pasadena, he oversaw construction and maintenance of fifteen locations totaling approximately 400,000 sq. ft.
Additionally, Carlos’ work included library building expansions, elevator remodels/upgrades, fire alarm and fire sprinkler design, library space planning, technology implementations (library ILS systems, RFID, security camera/access control, network infrastructure, and more), as well as, development and maintenance of municipal recreational areas, parks, Emergency Operations Centers, police stations, fire training facilities, and others.
Carlos worked closely with law enforcement to assess, develop, and implement effective library security policies, procedures, and personnel training. He has focused his efforts on de-escalation, deterrence, minimizing situational triggers, and security awareness.
In 2022, Carlos started Building Basics for Libraries to bring basic facility management and construction knowledge to library supervisors, managers, and administrators through webinars, video streaming, and in person presentations. He partnered with the California State Library and the California Library Association and now presents educational material through the California Libraries Learn(CALL) on-going education program. Carlos will be presenting an educational session at the California Library Association Annual Conference in June 2023.
